A note on Michigan politics
Michigan's current governor, Democrat Jennifer Granholm, is term limited, so she can't run for re-election in 2010.

Michigan's attorney general, Republican Mike Cox, announced today that he's running for governor. (He made the announcement on Twitter. Quote from NPR: "He says using social media to make the announcement is an example of his ability to look to the future for Michigan.")

The most likely Democratic candidate is the current lieutenant governor, John D. Cherry, Jr.

Cox and Cherry. The bad jokes just write themselves, don't they?

Cox is a smart guy and charming, plays the game well, but is WAY to right, even by Michigan Republican standards.

Cherry is inert to me, which means your average guy who doesn't follow politics doesn't know anything about him.

I just saw a poll saying that most Democrats in Michigan would like to see Debbie Stabenow run for the big chair, something like 49% of people polled... not sure about that either

I don't know whether Stabenow is tough enough to govern the state. She hasn't exactly been a leader in the Senate. I suspect name recognition was a factor in the poll.

Mike Cox is a slimy bastard. He's smooth and media-savvy, which means he looks a lot better than he is. And the Democrats will be too "nice" to bring up the moral failings that would have ruined him with Republican "family values" voters if they weren't such hypocrites.
