What's on Broadway
This year's Tony Awards show was the most technically ambitious I've seen, and I've been watching them every year for a long time. The opening number ran over eleven minutes, and included music from all four Best Musical nominees (Billy Elliot, Next to Normal, Rock of Ages, and Shrek), all four Best Revival of a Musical nominees (Guys and Dolls, Hair, Pal Joey, and West Side Story), the only nominee for Best Score of a Musical that wasn't also a Best Musical nominee (9 to 5), and the one musical nominee for Best Special Theatrical Event (Liza's at The Palace). That's an insanely difficult thing to pull off, and they did it beautifully. I could nitpick that there were a couple of sound glitches, and that I didn't think the songs from Pal Joey and Next to Normal went together well at all, but that really is just nitpicking.

(If you're wondering, yes, Elton John wrote the music for Billy Elliot, and Dolly Parton wrote all the songs, music and lyrics, for 9 to 5.)

Here's part 1:

And here's part 2:

Over all I really liked this year's Tony's. I think the little glitched made it feel real.. the over all feeling was less produced, more party.

Most of the production numbers were great!

Love NPH closing song.. sort of the mirror of what Billy Crystal's done at the Oscar's.

NPH was a great host... again, he seemed relaxed and enjoying himself.

The Tony's are one of the few award shows where I look forward to the production numbers almost more than the awards.

I liked Harris' energy. I thought his jokes relied too much on double-entendre and won't-quite-say-it references to his being gay, which was a little cutesy for my taste. I agree that the closing song was great, though, and I owe Mark Evanier a thank you for posting it - I turned off the TV as soon as they announced the final winner.

Curious what you thought of the rendition of "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" from the Guys and Dolls revival. Personally, I thought it was way too campy and self-conscious.

I don't know about "campy and self-conscious", but I've certainly seen that number done better. Guys and Dolls is one of my favorite shows, and if I were heading to New York, that would be way down on my list of shows to see.

I love the first mash-up of Tonight and Luck Be a Lady. I am sad that I didn't get to watch the Tony awards.

So many shows I want to see ...
